A Beginning: Procrastination and sloth, be gone!

March 16, 2007

The ideas I’ve let slip away by failing to record them could fill an anthology. But I’m determined to fight the twin demons of inactivity. Too long has my skill been left to dull and rust .

I have an avid interest in the news. For the last, well, all my working life, I’ve been a newspaper reporter. But low salaries and unrealistic expectations led me to abandon the smalltown paper biz. I started with my eyes on the heights of professional journalism. I imagined myself rising through the ranks en route to the pinacle: The New York Times.

But in six years since I graduated, I only once found a place I could focus on a single aspect of the business. When you start in the smalltime, they expect you to do everything, writing, editing, photography, even answering the phone.

And as my zeal was worn away by burnout, I delved into web journalism to rest my mind. And I saw that at the heights of journalism, my political views would likely get me tossed off that lofty pinnacle.

And in the deceptive machinations of an obviously partisan “unbiased media,” I could only feel disgust.  The institutions I once respected seemed to daily commit violations of utopian values I developed in J-School.
